How to Set Complex Repeating Pattern on iOS Reminders
It was always possible to set more complex repeating pattern using Shortcuts. However, at least from my experience, Shortcuts automation do fail horrendously, when it needs to run in the background. These are some edge cases that I have the latest Reminders could not handle on its own:
- Weather related pattern (needs a weather app)
- Business day related pattern, e.g. 15th or following business day (needs a calendar app)
But aside from the ones that do require to make logical decisions or external input, Reminders app now have somewhat robust repeating patterns, supporting up to every N years. The usual (every N days, every N weeks, every N months) patterns have always been available, I believe. It now supports day of the week based patterns too.
- Nth M-day of the month (e.g. first Wednesday of the month)
- Nth M-day of the year
Day of the week operations were far too common to the point I had to divide the Shortcuts so it won’t fail in the background. Mix it with business day patterns, that automation was asking for trouble. I would have to look for optimizing business day related reminders (e.g. only on business days need a calendar app), but regardless I think this will likely help offset a lot of automation anxiety for Shortcuts users.
