HomePod is truly a product of its time. Its core feature is to stream Apple Music with Siri. Some side hustles it can pull off: AirPlay smart speaker, or wireless home hub, but I tend to agree with the community consensus the wireless hub only works in principle. None of these features are unique to HomePod, let alone the most polished.

iOS Shortcuts is one of the main reason why I recommend iOS as a platform. Not only you can pull different apps together to automate ‘smart’ behaviors, it brings GUI accessibility for BASIC-like programming experience to iOS devices. I often find apps without a proper implementation are usually the one with makeshift ideas and scripts, overhauling annually, can technically do anything but just a bit worse.

Apple pulled the plug on 1st gen HomePod, otherwise affectionally called OG HomePod. I think users were already aware of what will become of OG. As the saying goes, in the long run, everything becomes a “vintage”, but HomePod’s case was different as the latest model featured less number of tweeters and powered by a chip used in Apple Watch series. Apple created a product line that focuses on audio but somehow decided to downgrade the hardware than before.
