App to Convert Food Volume to Weight

My first ever baking experience was a bit nightmarish. I couldn’t get some of the ingredients I had hoped for, and most importantly, I couldn’t measure it in a way that makes sense for a complete novice. An old American recipe called for “a stick of butter” and left out how big the stick is. Nowadays, quick Google search will yield variety of results, but results nonetheless.

Back to the present day, most recipe writers and food channels always recommend the use of kitchen scale. I second that opinion for two reasons: accuracy and ease of cleaning. You only need a big bowl and some spoons to measure out ingredients with a scale, and that’s the only washing up to do. However, there are still old recipes or old-fashioned recipes written in volume that needs to be converted over.

Food Weight Calculator is a website that has data sets of all manners of foods and ingredients, from simple AP flour, dairy, anything I frequently saw in the ingredient list of a baking recipe then converts from volumetric to weight. For example, one cup of wheat flour is roughly 125g. No doubt it could be used for cooking and other purposes too. The same website offers weight to volume calculator as well.

Personally, I keep tbsp and tsp measurements as-is, as most scales are not accurate enough to measure changes in 1/4 tsp of ingredient added to the batter. I also use grams exclusively while measuring weight, as I prefer not to second guess if it’s asking for volume or weight.
