How to Reconnect Dell U2725QE Monitor to Mac After Reboot
U2725QE does have its share of infamy amongst Thunderbolt laptop users, but none of them were particularly software related as far as I’ve heard so far. This issue, however, is entirely software. I really hope Dell would push a firmware update soon enough to address this issue. As such as it is, the purpose of this post is to share my findings as documentations and perhaps provide band-aid solution until the official fix is released.
Symptoms
I haven’t tested with a Windows PC, but when a Mac is rebooted while connected via Thunderbolt for both Hub and display, U2725QE monitor would lose connection and will not pick up the signal again. The problem is exacerbated by the fact the monitor locks the user out from any input; none of the buttons work, can’t bring up the OSD, let alone turn off the monitor with the physical power button. The only way to turn it off is by pulling the plug.
Band-aid Solution
Because it doesn’t happen consistently, — I’ve rebooted my Mac several times since I’ve bought the monitor, but it only happened few times — there is no permanent fix a user can use. But there was one band-aid fix I was able to use every time it happened.
- Unplug all the other video sources. If there are multiple machines connected to the same monitor, unplug those too.
- U2725QE monitor will display the usual ‘signals lost’ or ‘looking for signal’ popup.
- Now you would be able to control the monitor once again via OSD, or so if you wish, you could reconnect a Mac again.
I don’t quite understand how the power button can be locked out by a software glitch. From the manual, it doesn’t look the monitor can be powered down forcefully without pulling the plug. Hopefully Dell would address the issue soon enough.
