How to Boot in Recovery Mode without Apple Keyboard

Mac has quirky keyboards policies. Until the operating system is fully loaded, the machine will not take inputs from Bluetooth keyboards, again unless it’s been cleared —meaning, Apple Keyboard. Now the most obvious solution is to use a wired keyboard. But if you are on a wireless keyboard via USB dongle, it might strike as odd why the keystrokes would not register. This is a short band-aid solution for users like myself.

How to Remove “Today” Grouping from Windows 11 and Windows 10

Today’s special for Windows is weird grouping found in Windows Files Explorer. Microsoft has made a questionable choice here, whereby adding third axis of sort into existing 2D-friendly UI. If you have seen “today” or “yesterday” grouped separately under the regular lists of files, that’s the one we are planning to remove or disable.

How to Fix Time Machine Backup Server Authentication Error

Another how-to on Time Machine backup, available on all OS X and macOS machines. Friendly reminder: your Mac does include nifty backup tools for free of charge, and you can use any drives lying around. If you have an old drive, preferably more than 3 years, and if it is at least the size of your Mac’s system drive, that is a perfect candidate to stow away Time Machine backups in it. Do encrypt your drive though.

ControllerMate Not Compatible with Catalina

This is a quick announcement for anyone who read my MS Sculpt Keyboard posts. I’ve been made aware ControllerMate does not work with Catalina in current version. Unfortunately, circumstances surrounding the app seem to suggest the developers either do not have a specific time table to support Catalina or do not plan to support Catalina.

Duskers Quicksaver Housekeeping Update

I am yet to finish Duskers, the sci-fi survival game where you must survive using nothing but your drones to scavenge other, hopefully abandoned willfully, ships. General atmosphere of the game resembles much of Alien franchise, where computers so ancient are running probably most sophisticated programs ever written known to mankind.

File Not Found Error on macOS wfsctl

Apple has been consistently phasing out Server related apps and services. Some of them have been moved around to macOS, while the others are either killed off or been moved as an embedded feature. WebDAV was one of them. If you are so inclined, macOS can now handle WebDAV hosting without the Server app from Apple. But be warned, no GUI support.

Running Time Machine Backup Server on macOS

I know some other critiques must have already said this, but this is one of those moments it rings painfully true again. Household networking devices are still distant to average consumers, and looking at the price tags some of the reputable manufacturers are putting on, Apple could have gone ‘CarPlay’ on this, providing Apple-issued firmwares for the routers, instead of sending all router related businesses to oblivion. Current lines of products are far from ‘it just works’ attitude we want. Downsizing may have been more appropriate for this situation.

Retrieving Old or Deleted Safari Reading List Archives

But frankly, I believe it should be the job of the website itself to keep track of major updates. Leave a note, for instance, if an update went through. If an article or a post has been thrown out, there should be a reasonable background behind why it has been removed. Until then, you can rely on your setups to do it.

Plants vs. Zombies Quicksaver

The legendary Plants vs. Zombies was a different game. It was the game which pioneered the path of mobile video games. But it was also a game that lacked some of the obvious features, such as cloud saves. It was very very 2009.

Stuttering Screensaver in macOS

Planned obsolescence is a word thrown around so easily. I would argue lightning port has stronger evidences supporting Apple’s tactics, rather than a simple screensaver then can be fixed by one person, especially on a Mac. To give OP some credits, TB 1/2 obsolescences on eGPUs took a community of users to even kickstart a fix.

Customize macOS Media Key Behaviors

For better or worse, it appears Apple is pushing the media key to be more universal through out its platform. iOS already comes with unified media control on its control center, and it seems macOS will quickly follow suite. It then becomes the matter of how to streamline a control center of sort for Mac.

Accelerate an App for Internal Display on macOS Mojave

So the reason why I kept the draft was that Apple’s choice of eGPU handling in Mojave, is plain weird; it’s straight-forwardly bizarre. Settings like this should have been added to System Preferences or anywhere it can dictate its decision system-wide. Because Mac doesn’t, now we have to identify each application. There are scripts that suggest to remedy this by ticking all the boxes for you, but so far it did not work in all cases, such as the one I’ve posted. Hopefully we would see something more solid in near future.
